I read the Col's posting originally and was at a loss to reply at the time..But your posting opens the door for my reply...

In The Canadian Armed forces,since the Unity debacle,instituted by an ex corporal by the name of Hitl.......ahhh...Hillier...there have been three distinct warrant officer ranks..
Warrant Officer..Master Warrant officer and Chief Warrant officer...in that order..

On each base there may be more than one Chief Warrant officer,wearing the "Prancing Ponies" in silver...but there was only one "Base Chief Warrant Officer".... called a BWO...Whose distinctive Rank insignia was The Prancing Ponies in Gold....

I believe all three services abided by these ranks,during my service,which started when I joined the RCAF in '63 and ended in '77 with the exaulted rank of Warrant Officer..

The BWO sat at Gods right hand,The Base Commander,and God forbid any rank..Commissioned,non commissioned or other ,that ran a-foul of the BWO...
Life for that individual could and did become hell...

And New Lieutenants were a prime target for his ire and lived in fear of crossing paths ,even casually with the BWO..that man could spot a loose thread on a new louie at 1/2 a mile..and the his roar could be heard at two miles...and God help the poor louie if he didn't cover the distance between himself and the BWO in Olympic Record setting time in in his hurry to Address the BWO face to face..
Now I'm sure that if I should be so fortunate to reach the Pearly gate,and gain entrance,I'm sure that when I get to see the "Big Guy",standing at His right hand ,will be a BWO,,,,,..Bank on it...
