Default spare wheel carrier

Note, in the photo that was posted at 19:52, the truck has the spare wheel mounted on the right hand side, I have not noticed this before,

I've seen several wartime pics with the spare on the right. I can only assume it is a result of repairs where it was replaced the wrong way around.

And as for the sidelight wiring I'd have to look into that.

Default "Lying Down On The Job" Pic

Keith,

the pic of the Armoured Corp blokes working on the carrier is very interesting. It is an LP1 - early Ford horn, bullet-shaped truck headlight, and Local Pattern six spoked wheels.

I have not seen this photo before.

The spanner being used is an absolute ripper too.

Jared

Hi Richard, As for the side light wiring, like you all my chevs go through the guard & you may notice the position of the chev light is further out towards the outer edge of the guard compared to Ford. The only other explanation is the late production cab could be different.

Default 1950s timber jinker

I have to admit I helped them with the quote - the original was so wrong I just had to. I often write to the libraries where there is something I can add to a caption.

Quote:
Title: Harry Bartlett's Ford 'Blitz' lorry with timber jinker, ca. 1950
Location: Tarzali, Queensland
Date: ca. 1950
Creator: Unknown
Description: Harry Bartlett's logging truck is an ex-army 3 ton Ford 4X4 truck, known in Australia as a 'Blitz', with a semi-trailer timber jinker making use of a wheel/axle assembly from another Ford Blitz to allow interchangeability of tyres. The Blitz trucks were produced in Canada by both Chevrolet and Ford using identical cabs with a characteristic reverse-slope windscreen from 1942-1945 for service in WWII. They were officially known as Canadian Military Pattern Vehicles. Harry Bartlett's truck is probably a 1944/45 Ford F-60, assembled in Australia using Canadian parts for the Australian Defence forces. It would have been purchased as war surplus and the military bodywork removed before conversion to a timber jinker. The F-60 series was powered by a 95 bhp sidevalve V8 engine driving through a 4 speed gearbox and dual-range transfer case. Note the protection bar in front of the radiator grille, the opened windscreen for demisting or extra ventilation and the the battered fuel tank and oil leaks from the hubs on this example. Ex-army Blitz trucks were very popular in Australia in the timber industry and bush fire brigades, many remaining in service for over 30 years.

Default Wolseley Mudlark

Quote:
Title: Austin Champ prototype, the Wolseley Mudlark, 1950
Date: 26 July 1950
Creator: Unknown
Contributor: Queensland Newspapers
Description: The Wolseley Mudlark FV1800 was built by the Nuffield organisation (later part of BMC) to meet a British defence force requirement for a 1/4 ton General Service truck to take the place of American Jeeps. Twelve examples were made in 1948 and sent for testing in the UK and overseas. The Mudlark was an advanced design, with fully independent suspension and a Rolls-Royce engine, and was close to the design used for the production Austin Champ in 1952. Note the bulbous mudguards of the vehicle in the photograph, the towing hooks and spring latches for the bonnet and folding windscreen. Wolseley Mudlarks appear in the 1957 science fiction film "Quatermass", being driven by zombies!
A Wolseley Mudlark was loaned to the US Government in 1951 for testing and comparison to the MB & M38 Jeeps used by US Armed Forces at this time. 'According to the Report written in 1951/52 by the US Government and the Ford Motor Company, the vehicle suffered from transmission problems and also required a more efficient cooling system. It was considered to be well built but needed modifications to make it strong enough for military use. The axles suffered from oil starvation in the differential due to the design of the half-shafts allowing oil to trickle down from differential to outer tracta joints and hubs. Many of the faults were rectified on the pre-production Champs in 1951 and the production models from 1952. Some of the faults were still "in production" in 1953/54 and required modification instructions to be issued to Army Workshops!'. From http://www.austinchamp.com/extras/ph...ry/mudlark.htm accessed on 16/9/05.

Default Nice

Note on the quality of the image - during the 1980s many libraries created electronic copies of their images. This was before the widespread use of scanners. The negatives were placed on a lightbox with a video camera on a rostrum. The images were then recorded one at a time onto 1" videotape and later converted to videodisc. This is why you get the rather soft look of the picture above, typical of this type of transfer.
