Picture Australia images
Just looking at the French Scrapyard thread I thought I'd begin the challenge of going through the Picture Australia library and do an advanced search excluding images from the AWM to see what surfaces.
Here's an example: http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-an9885825-1-v Quote:

The caption for this pic states it is Barqah, Libya (WW2 sp. Barce), but it is actually 100's of miles away, being the switchback hill above Sollum, Egypt. This hill features in many of the War Diaries of Nth Africa, as Sollum was the last town in Egypt before Allied troops "Crossed the Wire" into Libya. Google Earth shows that the road is still pretty much as it was 67 years ago (Go to this spot on Google Earth, and just to the left (West!) you can still see the "Wire"!): |
Switch back hill
This would test the cooling systems of the trucks , I would be checking my brake fluid level and make sure she was running on all cylinders before tackling this hill.
Would also slip aboard a decent sized rock for the No 2 handbrake. Regards Jim S. |
Here's one from a different search in the same database.
