Picture Australia images

Just looking at the French Scrapyard thread I thought I'd begin the challenge of going through the Picture Australia library and do an advanced search excluding images from the AWM to see what surfaces.

Here's an example:

Title: Removal of the propeller from the wreck of the S.S. Dicky
Location: Dicky Beach (Qld.)
Date: 1963
Creator: Unknown
Description:
The propellor was mounted on a plaque which is located in the park adjacent to the wreck. The truck is a 1942 V8 Ford Blitz which belonged to Bob Bryan owner at the time of Sam's Service Station in Bulcock Street. Man pictured in the hat is Landsborough Shire Council foreman Frank McIvor.

Is part of: P87197
They're pretty accurate with the description - only one year out on the date of the truck.

Title: Car of a Brisbane tourist being taken on a truck to Quilpie railhead, 1952
Location: Quilpie, Queensland
Date: 1952
Creator: Unknown
Description:
Quilpie is located 1010km west of Brisbane by road and 980km by rail and was proclaimed a town on the 29th April 1917. The township is situated on the western bank of the Bulloo River and is out of flood reach. Quilpie's importance is as a railhead. It is the centre from which cattle from the Channel Country and beyond are railed and in good seasons upwards of 60,000 cattle pass through the railhead. Sheep also pass through in large numbers. The opal is a very sought after commodity and the district is the home of the Boulder Opal.

Due to the town's location and it's low rainfall, Quilpie is intensely hot and dusty in summer. The temperature during January and February often exceeds 40 degrees celsius, while winters are mild. The town itself has a population of about 600 and its annual average rainfall is only approximately 300-500mm. (Information taken from: Quilpie Shire Council website, 2007, retrieved on 20 March 2007 from <http://www.quilpie.qld.gov.au/visito...e%20Info.shtml>)

Yes, it beats watching sport on TV!

Frank Hurley was one of our most significant photographers, covering among other things the Mawson expedition to Antarctica.

Convoy of Allied military vehicles on a winding road, coast below, ca. 1940-1946 : (Barqah, Libya)
Just a quick pull on the handbrake and a reef on the steering wheel, and we'll take this thread off in a new direction.
The caption for this pic states it is Barqah, Libya (WW2 sp. Barce), but it is actually 100's of miles away, being the switchback hill above Sollum, Egypt. This hill features in many of the War Diaries of Nth Africa, as Sollum was the last town in Egypt before Allied troops "Crossed the Wire" into Libya.

Google Earth shows that the road is still pretty much as it was 67 years ago (Go to this spot on Google Earth, and just to the left (West!) you can still see the "Wire"!):

jim sewell 29-01-08 03:19

Switch back hill

This would test the cooling systems of the trucks , I would be checking my brake fluid level and make sure she was running on all cylinders before tackling this hill.
Would also slip aboard a decent sized rock for the No 2 handbrake.

Jim S.

It's a nice pic of cab 12s - the camo pattern is unusual, and also the 'C' for Commonwealth is usually not painted onto the side panel, although seeing it on the number plate was normal for early cab 12s which this one, ARN 22735 clearly is.
