Talked to Derk and the problem with his was that that shift tower bar (that upside down U shaped thing) was not on the right spline on the shifter. He undid the nut and moved it one spline and it worked great.
While I am glad I was able to help you through this, I really was hoping it was just that you were trying to take off in 4th like I did. That way I wasn't the only one to pull that boo-boo. But since you didn't then I guess I am.
