If both sides of the loop are of equal pressure, then there would likely be little to no flow through the cooler. The oil would just bypass the cooler and go straight to the engine.

Hard to say how important the cooler is for the little bit of use and hardship we subject our carriers to. It is not like we are going 100s of miles through the African desert with them. Just the same, I would want mine to work.
