Canadian mk1 oil cooler bypass
 
I stripped down the "H" piece that the oil cooler hoses mount to, in the central tube there should be a ball and a spring however mine are missing.... Anyone know where I can get another ? Or have details about size and spring type ?

The ball is a standard steel ball. The valve should be adjusted so that it opens at 15 psi. Do it with compressed air, under water. I can't help with a spring spec or ball size, but some one else will. The chilwell 63/63 workshop instruction book gives a run down on it.

I take it if there is no spring or ball it will just free flow to the oil cooler ?

If both sides of the loop are of equal pressure, then there would likely be little to no flow through the cooler. The oil would just bypass the cooler and go straight to the engine.

Hard to say how important the cooler is for the little bit of use and hardship we subject our carriers to. It is not like we are going 100s of miles through the African desert with them. Just the same, I would want mine to work.

I think I have a spare assembly out in the shed. I am heading out that way now, and if I can find it, I'll measure it up. The manual gives the ball size as 9/16th.

I don't have a way of measuring the tension, but here are the dimensions: Spring is just over 1" long (1.05) and just over 1/2 in diameter. The diameter of the spring material is .0625 (which is 16 gauge).

Spring is adjustable, so the overall tension will not be that critical as setting it properly.

Thank you very much Rob, I had a read up about setting it as you said using an air line

The ball and spring are the easier bit, the adjusting screw is a bit harder for me, that said I reckon I could machine one up .

There are fixtures for measuring springs at different lengths of their compression. But since these are so easily adjustable, there is just no need for it. There was plenty of room for adjustment in the housing, so a longer spring would be OK too. It is just a matter of setting the opening pressure.

Richard: You never mentioned you were missing the adjuster (ctl 7122) as well.
