WHOA!!!!
The worst thing you could do is try to remove the black on the box,..
It may have been transferred from Regular German army,Feldgrau(Grey) to the Wafen SS (Black)
I would want to have that box inspected and identified properly by an expert...
Just do nothing to it until you do,.,..You may be ruining a historical treasure...
