I'd say it's a Heavy Utility - their sight is familiar to my eye now with three of them around our campsite at Normandy

Would these be ex-BAOR vehicles? By 1958 surely the "front line" troops were to be issued with modern kit, weren't they?

Nah, by 1958 German vehicle production was in full swing again - now who would trade his brand-new VW Van for a tired Austin Ambulance?
