I'm going to buy an Engine crane is the SCA super cheap crane good enough does it have the height to get the motor over the hull sides ? If not any other brands to buy which will ..Dale

Dale, can you come up with an alternative?
I would suspect it would be at its limits, if it worked. Can you hang an endless chain somewhere?

If you are talking about the SCA 1250kg engine crane, the identical (made in China) crane is marketed here under OTC as model 2002. OTC lowers the rating a bit though, and only recommends 500 pounds fully extended, which is what you will need to get over the armour on a carrier and over to the installation point. Five hundred is a little low for that purpose.
Personally, I use the real OTC stuff which was made in the USA. I can't afford to buy the stuff new, but have made some good deals on second hand stuff. My current OTC crane (model 1820) will actually pick up a ferret hull and load it onto the trailer. |

I have a collapsible (on request, not by accident) hydraulic lift hoist. Similar to: http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/R...rane/8210072.p
The issue I keep finding is there is not enough vertical rise when loaded. Put a weight on it, and the caster wheels take all the pressure. Try to move it around, and the load swings, or the legs foul against something. If you are taking out an engine, consider how close you can get the body of the hoist to the engine compartment, then see if the hoist will have as much range as you need to hook on, lift it, and get it past the rest of the vehicle.

Ron, you are able to edit your own posts very easily.
Dale, I built my own set up like Scott posted. I'd go this way. Mine is 3.5M high, so had to assemble it inside the shed. I can easily drive through it (I have lifted and turned my carrier hull on to its sides, with mine) If you cant do that, but have a strong point (a supported beam in a shed?, or a suitable tree) If you can hang an endless chain (or chain hoist, or chain block) or what ever you call it, then you manouvere the carrier into place, lift the motor, drag the carrier away, and lower the motor onto a trailer. My dad used to use a wire strainer, but not recommended in this pc world. Engine cranes tend to take up a lot of room, and the front legs are often difficult to fit around things. The gantry will be similar, but much more versatile. Warning about an engine lifter: ![]() ![]() Do not be tempted to lift from a hook that is further out than the front wheels.

Thanks for all the tips everyone . I have just tilt tray VR2225 to my new shed 2.4 m side walls , I need to check the height in centre of shed . I'm thinking of buying the super cheap crane for other smaller jobs around the shed not for engine lifting , I can get my friend with his hiabb crane to do that but will still look at over head idea sounds much stronger and safe , I'll try and post some photos of new shed having trouble with photo bucket ..Dale PS super cheap have their cranes on special $199 . down from $499 . till 30 03 14

I have my carrier in a small garage and have backed under a suspended beam to lift engines and other heavy things out of my truck, then placed them into the carrier. It can be done very cheap and have the same effect as a big engine hoist. I also have a "shop crane" or "hydraulic lift" on a dolly that moves around. I find it takes up a lot of room and since I know where my project is sitting when it is in the garage I can position the beam to be in place for it. Simple wood beams bolted to run along the wall so it can slide back and forth, a rudimentary "gantry style" if you will. Works great for me and cost me about $100.

Ok I've got the old photo bucket sorted out . Here are some photos of my new shed it's about ten years old very dirty and dusty from the old owner of the property , must have been a wood worker lots of caked on red dust and spider webs , rats nest etc , plus ply over half of the walls so I strip it out and pressure cleaned every surface look like new now . This is my first ever shed I've only been waiting 52 yrs for this I've been working under a car port with my carrier for the last eight month I have to tarp her up everyday , what a pain in the ass can't believe how good it is to work in a shed. It rained all day today so I have test fitted some of the parts to the hull just to get a feel of how she will look , all's good from now on , shed is 12 mx 7 . I end up with 9m x 7m for my toys the rest is for house storage . Dale

I wish I had as much room as you. My current garage is only about 11' x 21'.
Carrier is pretty much all that fits in it with just enough room for tool boxes, furnace, work bench and welder. |

hi da\le . i agree with the previousl posts. i have a borrowed gantry crane with a 3 ton block that i used to replace the engine in the carrier.i used my truck mounted crane on my rodeo to lift the engine cover back on . it was just adequate. the carrier is looking great.

Thanks Keith .. " wish I had something like that " Keith do you mean the shed , carrier or indoor cloths line ??? . The indoor cloths line was a small part of the deal with wife , to be able to have the rest of the shed only gave up 600mm not to bad , Only thing every time she comes into the shed I can see her mind ticking over for a take over of more space , I had better fill it up fast ..Dale . PS . John just saw your post I'm going to order the mobile girder crane next week ,thanks for the spacers and CD's as you can see new wheels are done still a long way to go with vr 2225 to much work around the house for the next few months at least I own a carrier and it will move forward slowly .

Always enjoying peoples shops, particularly new ones, only one problem with shops they are never big enough. Got a kick out of the cloths line as well, never thought about suggesting that to my wife as justification for more space. Besides in my case the laundry would come off the line and be ready to be washed again. The topic of engine hoists is always a interesting just as with shops never being large enough, hoist never have enough lifting capacity nor jacks having enough lifting capacity. Cheers Phil

I am lucky my garage is 30ft x 30ft with an RSJ centre so I can lift engines in via block and tackle and a skate which runs along the RSJ . Here is a pic when it was still under construction.... Even that isn't big enough now that the lathe and all the kit is in there !

Dale, great clean shed, I seem to remember when my shed was as neat as yours. Nowdays it is rather full. My mobile gantry is over 3.8m. high and we are able to lift a fair weight.
Here is the Lynx hull suspended awaiting the chassis to be rolled, on a set of go-jacks, under it for the final time. A 3 point lift using the Leyland No7 set at the rear was all we needed to get the required height. We used the gantry to lift the original engine out of the speed boat into which it had been placed in 1958. Regards Rick.

Fantastic shed Rick. I see what you mean about they are never big enough . I remember you telling me that before when talking on the phone . The lynx's looks amazing sand colour looks spot on . Rick any change of a photo of your carrier which I think is 2250 close to mine I know you have not started it yet but still would be nice to see where it's stored . Dale

Andrew, I was just updating my Lynx register and listed on the thread below, some info on your Lynx.
http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=21839 Your hull should be No 2025 which is the newest listed hull number on the Army Registration Numbers lists at the Australian War Memorial. (Not the last ARN though. I have that one, ARN 123980.) I also have a photo of 123970 for you. Obviously post WWII and not so loved. I cannot make out the makes of the car in the back ground, but one looks like a Falcon Station wagon, or an EH Holden so mid 1960's. I haven't been able to find one of mine yet. Please get in touch with me as I understand that you may have another ex. Australian Lynx in New Zealand. Regards Rick.

You could start a competition where people can guess the number of LP2 carriers in the shed, just like jellybeans in a jar. Robin, nice leather seat on that Canadian carrier. Stop wasting time on the white one!
