Too hot to work here!

In fact you can't legally do any hot work (such as angle grinders) in the open today here in the southern parts of Australia.

In Melbourne at just after 6PM it's still 40C and Adelaide had 44 today, that's over 111F. Beer and shade are good options.

Hobart in normally cooler Tasmania has had it's hottest day on record.

What did it get up (or down) to where you are today?

It got to 41 degrees today at work. It was actually cooler in the plant than outside, but only just. Had sweat pouring off me while doing some painting near our north facing wall.

Only 34 or 35 here in QLD. Was 43 on Monday.

I poured hot coffee on myself, just to cool down!

Must be simply boiling in the antarctic, according to the trend of getting hotter in Australia the further south you go.

Hi Guys

45 degrees and a strong hot north wind today, I knew when I went outside this morning I knew we were in for a stinker and sure enough fire bombing planes been going over the house for most of the afternoon fighting a bushfire west of us. I feel for those Victorians who will get our hot weather tomorrow and I sure hope all the fire bugs stay home due to the heat, but that is wishful thingking.

We are also experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures: It's -12°C out right now, with a forecast high of -5°C today.

Normals for this time of year are -22 for the low, and -12 for the high, so I guess I can't complain.

The temp got up to -1oC just before noon at Hammond. But it was plenty hot, but not in the barn. Outside one could work up a sweat in no time - particularly when it involves snow removal from CMP/SMP hoods. This is a necessary task as the CMP hoods in particular tend to bend with the snow load. The SMP trucks were not too bad off, but they too were feeling the effects of the two foot deep snow on top. Only 10 more trucks to go!

We are expecting a high of 40 today at Yass. someone in the family thought it would be good to have a party in early rather than later on in January to beat the heat, now with the hottest day for many years we'll have to see.

I have worked in both the extreme cold ( Alert, and Repulse Bay tundra just accross the arctic circle) and the extreme heat (Cypress, Kandahar Airfield). It is almost hard to say which is better. I guess it comes down to the threat on the physical well being. At moderate negative temperatures you can simply dress warmer. At the 40+ above mark you can ensure adequate hydration.

End of the day, I guess I would take the heat over the cold. But quite frankly, I would prefer a climate where it just stayed at 21°C every day, and maybe 18 at night. Also, if it oculd rain only at night, that would be fine also.

Made it up to -3 outside right now. I am out in just a hoodie with no gloves and running shoes on. A nice break form the recent cold spell.

You should move to Brisbane.

Apart from a handful of days out of left field, the annual average temperature is 24c (75F) with summer tops seldom over low 30's and winter night time bottoms seldom below 10c.

I think we struggled to about 0 degrees C today, from an overnight low of -10 degrees C.

And my better half has booked tickets for us to attend the Spokane Rodeo this evening. Hopefully the indoor arena will be heated!

It's 16:22 hours, and is already 'late twilight'. No wonder Bears hibernate....

The TV weather station was showing the other day....... at minus -24 C if you rush out with a cup of boiling water and launch it in the air...... the boiling water turn to fog and snow before it hits the ground........solid water just disappears.

I am waiting for the next cold snap....drink a lot of hot tea..... and rush out to have a fast leak down wind to see if I can make yellow snow.....!!!!

.....and hoping to avoid frost bite.

The worst thing about heat is that you can only take off so much- everything takes longer to do because we turn sluggish, conversely, in the cold, you can only put so much on, everything takes longer because its all covered in snow thusly prolonging the agony of exposure to bitter cold.
I guess the only hapy medium is as Rob has suggested; 21c year round.

I was sightseeing in the Turkish side of the UN line in Nicosia, Cypress. An old turk made conversation with us, and laughed about how hot we looked at +40. When we explained that we occasionally got that hot in Manitoba, but also reached -40, he no longer laughed at us.

He also bragged about being a millionaire. It was not until afterwards that we realized that the turkish Lira was in such bad shape that a million of them was worth about $1100. So I guess we were multi millionaires.

Moral of the story is, the Turks have nothing over us. That said however, they were very disciplined soldiers who did not play games. Even at those 40° temps, they still wore the old wool battledress with the top button done up.

That was a good map, we had a similar one for the state after our hot few days, nice to see I still live in the driest and hottest state. When I start to feel too hot I just go on MLU and look at the photos posted by the Canadian guys, just as good as sticking your head in the fridge or taking the lid off the esky and taking a seat.

We could do with some of that chill here at the moment, Today is the hottest day on record across Australia, although the temperature here in Melbourne is fairly mild.
Howard sent a text message to say he had been evacuated to the beach where he is on holiday.

Wow, fires burning across multiple states now. More homes lost in Victoria and N.S.W, and looks like it is Queenslands turn for the heatwave, starting tomorrow. Expected to be 37c in Gympie, so that means home here will be maybe 40c or more. We take Gympies figure and add 2 to 3 to that, for our area.

Police interviewing three early teen 'Papa Romeo India Charlie Kilos' about starting fires! At that age I was playing with Matchbox cars, not practicing my pyromania skills. What's happening to our youth? Not enough floggings early in life, I suspect!

Woke up to 11.6 deg c this morning, after the last four days it feels freezing.
I have to check Mums house today, she rang last night to say the wind had ripped a sheet of fibro off the western wall.
