Road Trip! Not far but an adventure none-the-less.
Necessities: Blister packs of Balogna Toilet paper Red or White wine Fake business cards cooler with ice 1 bottle of tequila two french baguettes 2 rings Kulbasa Shoe Box deck of cards 6 pack coors light 1 case of Coke 1 Oxy/Acet rig Bag O' Various Tools Destination: The birth place of the modern oil industry. Petrolia Ontario, home of two hardoilers, Albert Baines and Walter Brand. Geoff Bottoms of HUP on Steroid fame, Ted Whipp a long lost Petrolia boy, now Windsor Star reporter and myself left the home of the Ford CMP to introduce Geoff and for myself to meet Albert for the first time. I did a similar trip last year but Albert was no where to be found....rumour had it he was in some Orleans place...didn't say if it was old or new Orleans. We spent the whole day enjoying the most gracious hospitality Petrolia had to offer. First an RV at Walter's place with a formal introduction for Geoff. Albert arrived on scene shortly after...Ted Whip was introduced to Albert who immediately said, your Charlie's boy, Ted mentioned that yes in fact he was and whenever he went back to Petrolia that was how he was known to the older folks of the community. After a good chaw it was off to Walter's oil field to check out the FAT. It was not the first time I had an opportunity to look at it, but it still astounds me at the detail and completeness of the restoration work. Beautiful. After a view of the FAT and the oil field and the collection of "spares" that had been gathered over the years it was off to "Munchies" for a good nosh. Just as quickly as we finished we were off to Albert's machine shop. I have to tell you that an entire thread will be devoted to this working museum. I say museum because although it still produces products for the local oil industry, when you walk under the sign with an establishment date of 1914 and through the door you are literally back in the 1920's with a completely outfitted machine shop all driven by leather belts and pullys. How many machines...15, maybe 20 driven by these huge leather belts being driven by one large electric motor....INCREDIBLE. Anyway, I digress. After a complete tour of the machine shop it was off to Albert's place to see his C15. Another work of faithful restoration to near perfect status. Walter was having a little difficulty replacing the vacuum line to the distributor so Geoff, the master machanic that he is had it in place in a wink. A quick look at the watch and it was hard to believe it was past 4 o'clock. The day had flown by....so it was farewell till next meeting and on the road back to Windsor. By all accounts it was a most excellent day. Once again, Albert and Walter, many thanks for your hospitality... Last edited by Mike Timoshyk; 20-07-09 at 04:19. Reason: spelling |

A couple of more pics to "flesh-out" the story of the trip to Petrolia.

That last pic is, I must say, very "Artful" Mike, and also a very good candidate for the 2010 MLU Calendar.
![]() Great trip report. PS: What do the fake business cards say? "Not the real Mike Tymoshyk"? |
