Default Transfer case control linkage

I was recently looking at the parts list for the C30 and noticed that two types of linkage were shown for the transfer case. I've never seen the later version. Does anyone have knowledge of it? Did it work better or worse than the early linkage? It looks like it was simpler to produce by separating the funtion of the PTO from the front axle and range select, but how did the range select and front axle engage work, what was the spring in the front axle select for?

For what it's worth, the C60S, C60L and C15TA parts lists only show one type of transfer case control linkage, the one shown as the earlier C30 version. I think of the C30 as having been obsolescent to obsolete by late war, so why did they design a "new, improved" linkage for only this truck?

The C60X does show two types of linkage. In the case of the C60X they are controlling different functions but in general terms they looked similar, the early tower had a casting and the later version had separate levers.

C15A and C8A had single speed transfer cases (without PTO) and as far as I know never went to the fancy tower version like the C30 early.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Default Transfer Case Control Linkage

Hi Grant,
Afraid not, I, like you cannot see how the later system would work correctly, as it looks like one could engage High or Low in the transfer box, and 2 or 4 wheel drive, AND also engage the winch, all at the same time. There appears to be no control between axle drives and winch drive. Maybe that's why we have never seen the later linkage

Thanks for the suggestion, perhaps the ability to engage the winch while the wheels were powered was why the newer linkage was designed. Possibly the senior staff then decided that, given the chance, the troops would overdrive the winch cable making a rats nest of it all, balled up inside the frame.

The linkage looks like it would match the change plate I have out of a fire truck,( picture of plate in thread Robert Pearce starts to restore ). The plate describes a single change from High 2WD to Low 4WD and seperate leaver to engage the PTO to run the pump.

Default Transfer case shift Tower

Grant

I have the old style shift tower on my 44 CGT. Just rolled up some 5/8" cable on this set up. So whats apparent is you cannot engage wheel drive at the same time you operate the winch. Its either winch only or drive only. The parts picture doesn't show an over ride lever on the transfer case shifter lever.
This is how it's done.
