which is annoying to me as I have just found a new Mid-East allocation series for trucks delivered under S/M 2005 direct to Egypt.

Default Question for David

Hello David,

seeing your name pop up reminded me of a question I was asked this last week about one ton WW2 Dodges.

We know the Canadians built a pile of 133" one ton panel vans for the Commonwealth Forces, as they are seen in brochures and in a good few period shots, mostly in north Africa kitted out as Ambulances.

I'm sure when we chewed though this some time back we noted that there were bundles of 133" and 120" wheelbase trucks procured, which puzzled me, as although every single one of the one ton 133" wheelbase trucks could have been panel vans ( possible, but unlikely I'd suggest ) the 120" one tons would have to have been pickups, as that chassis length only came as pickups ( half ton panel van is 116" wheelbase, one ton panel van is 133" wheelbase, but one ton pickups came as either 120" or 133" wheelbase )

Can you give me an indication of the total number of 120" and 133" wheelbase trucks procured on S/M's please? If there were relatively few 120", then it might just have been a handful of pickups for general use that never left Canada, but if there were a substantial number of 120", even if quantities of 120" and 133" were relatively similar, we might infer that 120" one ton pickups were shipped and used up the sharp end - we just haven't seen pictures.

Thanks in advance for any numbers you can give.

Default Dodge numbers

I don't have any numbers other than it seems the Census Numbers allocated to donated panel vans used as ambulances. I have put my file on the internet as a doc file as I don;t have the facility now to save as html files these days.

I do however have a parts list with all Canadian and US trucks delivered as Dodges or Fargos and they seem to have serial numbers. There is also a list of numbers for US war contracts which has been interesting to peruse.

Default Camions DODGE Civils et Militaires

Time to revive this thread and scrub up our knowledge about Dodge designations.

Back in 2012 Serge wrote:

As Gordon has explained there was two kinds of frame : the long frame for cargo and the short frame for tipper.
The name of the truck was changed from T110 to D60 (L for long wheel base and S for short wheelbase) (The letter D to make the difference with FORD (F60L) and CHEVROLET (ex C60L).
Among the long wheel base versions we have some difference
D60 L5 Single rear wheels with british wheels (8 nuts) and an EATON double speed at the differential (I think for desert use).
D60 L9 with double american style wheels at the rear and one speed at the rear differential
D60 L12 with double american style wheels at the rear and an EATON double speed at the differential
The body were all metallic or semi composite (wood and steel)

For the short wheel base
D60 L13 double wheels at the rear and Eaton differential with two speeds always with a tipper

I remember having seen short wheel base with single british wheels at the rear but I dont know the designation.

There was also the D60 L14 but only for civilian use and mainly using a stack and plate form body and also left hand drive.

A book would be wroten about these fabulous trucks.
Today I found a nice overview of military and civilian Dodges which complements Serge's summary:

Revue Technique Dodge 4.jpg

It was published in the March 1950 issue of the Revue Technique Automobile , a French automotive technology magazine.

Default Dodge

I've seen quite a few of the little grey covered Drivers Handbooks for the T110-L models, the books probably arrived with the trucks that were delivered to Australia from Canada. The cabs were designed to split into two pieces, maybe this was done for easier shipping, in a box.

I cant recall seeing a T110-L with the military divided rims. Maybe the surplus dealers here changed the wheels to the civilian style 20" wheels ?

They are nowhere as common as a CMP is , but I have seen a few. A nice one turned up at Corowa years go, it was finished in a strange gloss bright blue with RAAF markings - it was a barn find , it had been given the 'beauty treatment' with a quick spray job and it was for sale.

I've not seen a D15 here.

At least one surplus dealer was selling them with the army wheels . 1946 advert

Queensland Advert for the 7 Ton semi-trailer version.
