Alex,
Well that is certainly a notion worth considering! You may quite well be correct as it doesn't seem to have any markings at all. The only thing it has going for it is that it apparently was in the Belgian military museum for decades before the museum closed its doors.

I welcome any other comments, explanations or theories.
