![]() What fascinating stories they told. When I was a kid, my Dad was based at Terowie with the AIF in the mid north of SA, so I can sort of relate to a lot of those happenings. Terowie was a Change of Gauge depot & everything going north had to be trans-shipped over to the narrow gauge line. I recall freight trains which "seemed" miles long, loaded with Guns, Tanks, Carriers, Trucks, Wiles Cookers etc, etc You name it, it was there. It was also a large Staging Camp where Troops were held pending rail transport north & was the Station where Gen. MacArthur made his famous, "I will return..........." speech to the media of the day. The platform exists today, albeit in a bit of a sorry state, & a stone with plaque marks the spot where he allegedly stepped off the train. |
