Tom, not sure on the ladder lacing techniques, but I believe that was how we were to have our boots done while on parade when I was in Cadets.
I have also heard that this was standard practice in the Commonwealth forces. I also spoke with a former OSS commando who told me one way to identify an unknown soldiers nationality was to sneak up on them and feel the lacing on their boots to determine whether they were a friendly or not. Truth, urban legend, I'm not sure. Comments???
