Pettigrew attacked in botched Montreal robbery

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew suffered injuries to his nose and mouth after being attacked outside a Montreal subway Wednesday night, according to reports.

In what is believed to have been a botched robbery attempt, Pettigrew was attacked while using his cellphone as he entered a west-end Montreal station, according to the French-language all-news channel LCN.

He didn't have his bodyguard with him at the time.

Pettigrew was aided by a 19-year-old man, and his phone was returned to him, LCN reported.

Pettigrew's office said the minister was not targeted. They also said it was not unusual for him to take the subway without bodyguards.

Frederick Estelle, 24, is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. He has been charged with aggravated assault, and underwent a psychiatric evaluation on Thursday.
