			Necessity brings invention

This truck and about six others were made by a local engineering firm in a small country town in Western Australia . They purchased surplus Aust made armoured cars , lengthened the chassis and used the steel from flattened out 24 inch diameter water pipes to make the body .

Yes, that looks like a Dingo front axle - quite a racy looking design too.

Can we see some more pictures? The flattened water pipes are interesting. Reminds me of Tom Kruse on the Birdsville Track using pieces of flattened sewage pipes to assist in the crossing of sand dunes.

The firm that converted them was called Electweld Steel and that is the name on the badge on the front of the vehicle

I only took the one picture at the time , will take some more next visit I make . Have attached some picture's of a Dingo and another conversion. ( the dingo looks as if it has had a C or F15 axle added to the front ) Jim S

			Hi Jim

It would be interesting to know what the front, from the firewall to the bumper was made of. The long profile with the flat front looks more like one of the 18 Australian Armoured Cars than a Dingo but if it is just sheet metal then it's not. Certainly more exploratory photos would be of great interest. Keep the photos coming. Bob |

			Hey "Bob's yer Uncle"!

Comparing the top pic with Jim's second one (unmodified Dingo) you can see the weld line sloping down the side of the engine cover where they've joined the new metal to the old. Interesting point about the bonnet line now resembling the Aust A/Cs, kinda shows the development. I'm sure the rear bodylines of the Dingo could also be built up to replicate the A/C's lines. |
