Some thoughts:

Then: lots of spare parts...plenty of tires...very little rust.

Now: rare spare parts (at a King's ransom), old worn tires...lotsa rust.

Then: Public in awe with modern technology...

Now: Politicians in awe of ancient technology...overheard at the opening of Veteran's Highway No. 416, at which the S&P Museum had three vintage trucks and guns - "It's good to see the army out helping us celebrate the opening".

Then: petrol - pennies to the gallon.

Now: petrol - a mortgage payment to fill the truck.

Any other thoughts?
RH:

WRT petrol...Yeah...when I put my CMP to bed for the winter, it'll cost some $120.00 in fuel (at today's prices) in order to fill up the tanks, plus the cost of stabilizer and lead additives and fogging stuff.

Getting to be an expensive hobby.

In my dream of dreams, some MP will produce a Bill that will give us all some form of compensatory relief, in order that we may carry on the tradition of our military heritage.
