So that was it...
Sorry Bob, but no. The error we received was for a corrupted thread - something to do with the write process to the database - and the repair utility obviously couldn't fix it, so deleted the offending thread. It's not something anyone did, I don't think, just something which happens occasionally when the stars are out of conjunction (or something).... have to go look this one up and find out if there's a workaround for next time...
