In years gone by I used a graphite based paint-like substance on a set of 4wd springs. This was made made for Railway use in dry lubricating the rails on a set of points (trans:Track Switch?). It totally transformed the springs from stiff, squeaky and streaked with rust to supple, quiet and a nice graphite-black colour. Unfortunately, this stuff is no longer produced as it was found to be carcinogenic or ozone depleting or something. The vanilla-safe replacement now has an outdoor lifespan of about 2 weeks !
