Rob,
I suspect that your plan will work. My old plate is buried in the snow - but it lasted a good deal better than some of the other parts - so it must have been at least hard on the wear curve surfaces. The mating rollers are rather large, and hard, so flame hardening that edge would be just about right. Good luck. Stewart
