Ron Pier... it kept me awake, on and off over some seven years.
Was it a left-over from an early stowage design? Did a portion of the BREN tripod some how touch that area? If the PIAT or Boys was mounted on the engine deck, did a portion of either somehow need clearance?

What about the change from the smaller engine ventilation screen of the MK-I* and UC-2 made of copper wire? The screens are not interchangeable between the MK-I* and the MK-II*, could that be a clue?

Is it anything to do with the oil filter? Mine hasn't got one, so I can't check it.

Oil filter sits on the drivers side roughly mid engine bay.

I know there was a canvas winter cover that went over that grill for cold weather operations . Does it have something to do with that ?

Top of the fitting has the hose coming out of the side, from memory nothing comes out of the top... need to dig my filter housing out of storage as you have me thinking now !!
