I can't see anything in easy reach of a spanner! The only things that line up under that aperture are, the clutch rod pivot and the bush that the gear change rod runs through. If dripping oil onto those components were the case, then it could easily be done through the diamond mesh without the need of the rectangular hole.......I dunno!?? Ron
