Sounds different then on the late HUPs
Does it have a wood spacer so that the ring is horizontal or is it at the angle of the roof.

But the HUP has two hole for the cover tie to come through and the has a curved metal strip that is bolted through the cover and the roof. plus it has the straps for rolling the cover up when open.
