Then I would say you have something miss matched. I presume that you have the ETW1 Carter carb on it as well as the CAST elbow going from the carb to the air cleaner ?

Here are a couple pictures of a M37/late war (44-45) WC air cleaner on the left next to a early 3/4 ton WC air cleaner on the right and they are basically the same height with the M37 air filter at 11" in diameter and the early WC at 10". They are within 3/16 difference in height when installed on the elbow.

Do you have a picture of your setup ??
