Default Chevrolet C60 twins (reposted)

Well I will try again.
I was visiting a fellow MV-collector a few weeks back, and noticed two of his CMP's.
And by chance they stood side by side....
It is one C60L and one C60S
The C60S has the following dataplates:

C60444-M-P
2844222469
PR 3848305
SM 2569
Aug 21-42

C60444-M-WIN-4

The C60L has the following dataplate:
C60448-M
2844322574
PR 3844633
SM 2654
AUG 21-42

C60448-M-STORE-2

and n the door: L 4999868

Now; who can tell me what a WIN-4 is? It has a winch in the front of the body like the derrick, but is it a derrick (or was it an auger??) Anyone having any pictures or orher information on this truck?
And I have never seen any diagram of the interior of a STORE-2, would be nice to see one.
And the SM numbers? Are they this different because they were ordered by different branches?
In a garage nearby he had another C60L (a very original and very nice one)serialnumber 2844321008 which was delivered AUG-6-42 but this one has a SM order number 2570. This makes a production of 1566 C60L's in 15 days, but again a big gap in the SM numbers (84).
And above all, he even had another truck witch has been "WIN-4"

Default A lotttle actually!

Yes it's a Winch truck!
L 4999775 to 4999845 Contract S/M 2569 'LORRY 3 TON 4 X 4 WINCH ARTICIZED'. There is a photo in the Imperial War Museum of one, # IWM PHOTO KID 1284...

The other truck is in the batch L 5421311 to 5421420 to Contract SM 2654 for 'LORRY 3 TON 4 X 4 STORES'. The census number L 4999868 is actually from the series:
L 4999866 to 4999912 Contract SM 2568 'LORRY 30 CWT. 4 X 4 OFFICE ARTICIZED' E.G. L 4999883 IWM PHOTO KID 4589 but I am sure that the vehicle is actually a C60L. It would appear that the census number is not correct on the face of it.

L4948501 to 4950228 Contract SM 2570 'LORRY 3 TON 4 X 4 GS ARTICIZED' AS AT 1 OCTOBER 1942: 1,728 PRODUCED

I am going to add the serial numbers quoted into my database and then repost all 1942 C60S and C60L models known to compare serial number and dates.

Default another query for you David

David

I have a C15 blitzwith chassis number 2842100047S do you have any means of dating this oneas the general motors of Canada plate is missing. Also do you think the S means assembled in Sydney, I have noticed others with S on them as well around the district. Keith may know better, but I thought that chevs were only built in Melbourne. I once had a lend of a book printed by G M H on their war effort and what they made in Australia.

Default March 1943?

Max, I have a note of your truck already! This is the complete 1942 C.15 database that I have:

2842100047S [SYDNEY-ASSEMBLED?]
2842100100 [HOLDEN-ASSEMBLED] PRESERVED
2842100244M ENGINE # SR3,779,671 [MELBOURNE-ASSEMBLED?]
2842100317M ENGINE # PR3,835,385 [MELBOURNE-ASSEMBLED?]
2842100508S ENGINE # WR3,815,503 [SYDNEY-ASSEMBLED?]
2842100591M ENGINE # SR3,858,033 MARCH 19 1943 [MELBOURNE-ASSEMBLED?]
28421000919 ENGINE # SR3,851,790 WO12 (WIRELESS) HOLDEN-ASSEMBLED
2842130xx ENGINE SR3,853,267
2842131045
2842131140
2842131409
2842131421
2842131482
2842132593
28421M40750 ENGINE # PR3,835,432 [MELBOURNE-ASSEMBLED?]

I have yet to come across any Brisbane-assembled CMPs or any Adelaide-assembled ones for that mater, but here is a rare known Perth one:
2844400189P ENGINE # WR3,859,926 MAY 5 1944 [note "P" at the end of the serial number and contrast it with:
28443P00264 ENGINE # PR3,875,501 ASSEMBLED MAY 1944 [where the "P" is after the model number].

Having said that, in post-war years Brisbane did not use "B" as a Plant Code ["A" was "Adelaide"], and used a shortened Model Number.

Default MORE NUMBERS, THANKS!

Max, thanks for the info. The first one, the C.15 # 41, Sydney-assembled, is a new one on me. The next one I knew of, but the engine is oin theory a right-hand drive Truck motor, say from May 1944. as fitted to a Maple Leaf or Chevrolet MCP [or intended to be].

As to the APPARENT C60S 38442M69437, is that serial correct as I have info only of two others, and the sequential number is much higher...I take it that it IS/was A Model 8442 and not A C60L model 8443?? The other I have thanks, although note the "AUS M" which I assume represents "Austrlai Melbourne" assembly.

Yes please, more serials!

EDITED BY DAVID APOLOGIES MAX..

Default CKD -v-SUP Australian assembly

I have a suggestion from all the evidence so far that Holden-assembled CKD CMPs had blank plates and the serial number was allocated at the assembly plant in Australia: A,B,M,P,S in theory though I have yet to see any apparent Adelaide or Brisbane assembled trucks. Thus each plant started their sequential number with 0001, plus plant code. However, SUP trucks carried the CANADIAN serial number and dataplates but had a Holden assembly plant stamped on as well when built up and bodied. This also ties in with known South African and New Zealand assembled trucks that carried their "X" codes. I assume that any CKD assembled in Bombay in India also had the relevant "X" code prefix. The same goes for Batavia, NEI.

I think you're probably correct, David - I don't recall ever seeing a paint or trim filled in.

Your research into these interesting subjects is outstanding and much appreciated!

Default Bollards!

Sorry Mate, but it's guys like you who come up with the goods, namely taking the trouble to find these relics and then enable backroom guys like myself to put the jigsaw together.

So, I have to say, bollards to that and say keep up the excellent work Keith, Geoff, Max, Hanno, and everyone else.

Default Australian/overseas Chevrolets and Fords

I have noticed that I now have sufficient information on these 1941-42 S/M contracts for Ford and Chevrolet CMPs to be able to post them for perusal. I am just going to lift them up to my website and then I will advise what the http address is. Basically I have found several contracts for overseas delivery and they may prove of interest to our Antipodean friends.
