I know it's difficult in the situation where you were, but you can make breaking the tracks so much easier by moving the machine so the effected pin is between the sprocket and the rear road wheel. Alternate the front idler and the front road wheel. Also by backing off the front idler you remove the tension from the track making it easier still.
