That is the Canadian version of the British 1 gallon oil can. You will find stowage carriers for these on British trucks, even postwar they continued in use. Normally containing engine oil. The Australians also used the same pattern can and was part of the kit on their trucks in to the 60's. You may well have a carrier for this on your Chev. Richard
