I have this original WW2 vintage 5th Armoured Div symbol vehicle transfer in my collection... stuck in the pages of an album from a veteran's estate.
Is there any benefit from investigating reproductions of this? Cheers Tim |

I had some made up for my carrier from pictures, and I would say having an original would definitely make it easier.

Might I suggest a 1:1 template? Even if it is just a photocopy or simple outline drawing or mylar stencil. Thse were the same size and shape for the various divisions with the exception of the background colour. I used a photo copy from Barry Beldam's book to do the paint work on my 12 cab years ago... Nothing makes me crazier than a maple leaf that looks like everything other than a maple leaf. eg a pine tree or cartoon drawing of same... |

The worst thing in my books is when someone paints a WW2 military vehicle, and sticks the 1964 Canada flag type maple leaf on it. I cannot count how many times I have seen this, and there are still a few kicking around the collection at work.

I will ask a friend who works in graphic design to see if he can copy this... he should be able to reproduce it to make it look exactly as the original.
For other divisions, will change the background colour in accordance with below: Tim Last edited by Tim Bell; 17-04-15 at 10:45. Reason: Added image |

Colours fade when exposed to glue and paper. When you photograph it, try to get a Red Green Blue White Black colour sample card in the shot. A skilled Photoshop worker can use the examples to match up the decal with its correct colours. But it is really hard to properly freehand the details like the points on a maple leaf.

Nice find Tim; great to see an original water slide decal.
Colin's website has some more info on this subject: http://bcoy1cpb.pacdat.net/markings_...y_vehicles.htm Quote:
Tim, let me know if you have any luck at your end, otherwise I can do it for you. If your next step is printing a decal or sticker, than use a Pantone K5 fan-deck directly to the original decal. The number can than be used in the Illustrator or Coreldraw file for the correct colour (that doesn't take fading into account though), or communicated with the print-shop directly. Alex

I have the original artwork for the maple leaf which I found at Archives. I have used this as part of my Service Publications logo since day 1. I have attached it here although it may be small in size any photo editing software will allow you to increase its size.

Tim, Be careful assuming the colours of the cloth in your sample are correct. There were significant variances in the cloth used for the division signs. In particular, 2 CID, 3 CID and 5 CID can be found in a range of tones / colours. 3 CID was particularly difficult to get a consistent colour. It ranged from the horizon bleu to a slate grey. (For example the 3 CID in your image appears to have a lot of blue in it.)

Will do - the cloth patches have been folded away in an album most of their lives... so shouldnt have faded too much... but we will refer to other sources too. If anyone has the RAL paint number then that would be excellent. Cheers Tim |
