There was a big issue on those seals in recent years. The US made ones were to a tighter spec than a lot of the military engines, resulting in a lot of heat to the point of seizing the rear main bearings.
Options are to look for pre 1990s manufacture seals. I know one dealer in the US has NOS seals for these engines. As well, in talking with John Bizal last fall, he mentioned he was having new seals made up to proper military specs. I went with the MD Juan rear seal, and sure enough, it leaked. If you are working on a CJ though, you should be fine with the Victor or Fel-pro seals. Go with the 2 piece neoprene style, rather than the rope. It will save you having to pull the engine and removing the crank. |

Hi Rob,
that is exactly my concern, I would like to get a seal that will not ruin my engine. how can I find pre 1990 seals (what do I look for on the package) and id still feel concerned about ruining a good running motor. I have one engine that is original to my 1947 CJ2A. another Kaiser Supersonic engine out of a henry j car that for the time being will be put into the CJ2A and one willys MB engine, that wont run anytime soon. if you cannot say the US company that has nos seals could you pm me? I hear Payen seals are good and reliable. help me get my engine running again safely |

NOS seals
I have NOS pre-1990 2-piece seal set @$CAD 20 plus post and HST. They can be installed with the crank in place. The rope seals are more difficult to use since you pretty much have to take the crank out. PM me if interested ...... Brian

John Bizal show them in the latest edition of Supply Line for $27.50, a new rear main seal specifically made to eliminate seal problems and locked up crankshafts.
