I beleive that over here they have used the lids off LARGE coffee containers(Nescafe), about same size and with a lip!!
Dont know how effective it is as cant recall the look but worth looking into!!
If a bit flimsy, try a couple glued back to back and seam sealer/filler (Bondo) to fill the edges!
