From a practical point of view, I reckon the driver of the carrier had a big say in that design of Bren mount, by mounting it slightly further back it lowers the chance of him getting hot brass down his neck..... And having had hot brass down my neck during exercises I can say it sucks big time !! Especially under sustained rates of fire.
Just a thought :-)
