I concur looks more like a hand brake boot, for two reasons the rectangular shape of the floor end and I would say that it is hand brake because of the larger top opening and snap, if it was for the starter it would only need a small opening at the top as you would unscrew the knob to put the boot on. But as I look closer at the pictures it does have two separate boot sections, one for the brake lever and one for the starter.

How about a part number from HUP Parts Book 1945 Group No. 4.612 part number 5825793 Description BOOT ASSY., Hand Brake & Starter Lever

Interesting piece of original equipment and the boots do make a difference on how much air hot or cold comes into the cab. I made similar boots to try and cut down hot air from engine coming into the cab on my Pat 12.

in retrospect You are probably correct...hand brake and starter as this fits the (under?) the similar shaped floor plate. Its been a quite a few years now since I had my beautiful big CMP..

sure makes the cab look much better when installed.."finished" so to speak.

A couple of years back, I sewed up a boot for Rob of the Hammond Gang. I am sure photos are still on the site.... Hammond 2008 post 164
I have the material to make such items..... and the machines to sew them up.
Now..... whether I sew one or twenty.... the set up time is about the same...
If there is some interest..... I could run off a batch of repros....

Just testing the waters...

For my edification.....

When did the canvass boot start appearing on the CMPS....?

I can see the HUP after being driven by an officer and water splashed on his expensive pants...... being retro fitted with a canvas boot.....but...

did all cab 13 have them.... or was it a later comfort item that appeared late in the war......?........ and did similar "boots"... for the comfort of the driver ever exist for cab 11 and cab 12....... I suspect that in the cab 11 they just issued rubber boots to the poor driver.

Boobee: Not an expert in this area, but my HUW came with a shaped "felt" boot for the transmission shift arm. I'll have to check it out next time I'm at the shop and take some photos, but will still go with Guy's units if he decides to run a batch. My 2 cents....Robert

Very nice....looks good on a HUP..... not sure what may fit on a cab 11.

Having driven a M 37 in muddy weather I know that not having proper seals on all the levers protruding in the floor is a guarantee for a wet cold wash.....

I figure by the time Guy has done all his orders 20 + he will be really good at it so I will order mine then....hihihi

At least I can save on the shipping....

Hi Bob

I think you will find that the boot idea works good on the Cab 11 and 12 but that it is a different style of boot. With the starter lever up in the middle of the rear of the dog house, you really need a boot as it is a big source of hot air.

While the hand brake lever has a different shape so that the boot needs to accommodate a different sweep. Will try and get some pictures of the Pat 12 boots I made.

....... steam plant boiler blew up 2 Winters ago...... we never ran out of warm air.......

Thanks Phil....... should be a trick to fit around the andlged floor opening...strange I don't rememebr ever seeing a cab 11 or 12 with the booties in place...

Just something else to ponder !!!!

I have checked with the Hammond Barn crew..... they do not have any shifter boots to pass on for a pattern. So........if anyone out there has a sample of these double shifter boots and is willing to pass them to me , I can speck them out, and make up some new ones.

Hi All

Here are some photos of the Boots on my Pattern 12 these are not based on anything other than the need to cut down on the hot air coming into the cab area from the engine.

The starter boot is held in place by simply sewing a length of stiff plastic tubing made into a loop in the bottom of the boot, which is squeezed through the opening and then expands.

Excuse the pine needles in the Pattern 12, such is life for a open cab truck even when parked out for short periods of time it collects leaves and needles.

Looking at the remains of the felt under the plate for the starter and parking brake on my HUP it had the simple felt closure on the holes. The felt must have been 1/2 to 5/8ths thick originally.

Hi All

I just finished setting up an industrial sewing machine to do the canvas work on my HUP and needed a project, so below you see pictures of Prototype #1 Pattern 13 Hand Brake and Starter Boot. This was accomplished with a little photo interpretation of the photos Marc posted. (Hope this is OK Marc)

From the photos and having the dimensions of the mounting trim plate I worked out the measurements and did a cad drawing for template to cut the fabric. Excuse the ugly color fabric it is just scrap synthetic canvas, I found as with most fabrication projects it takes me two or three tries to produce an object that is acceptable to my eye. The first one is temporarily installed in my Pat 13 C60S so I can see how it works, really determine if it is worth the effort.

If it is I’ll try and figure out how to post the CAD drawing or the fabric templates full size for easy replication.
