the grille on my 1942 Canadian Mk1 is square holed round wire it does not have any cut out or access hole....whether it is original or not I don't know, but it certainly looks as it should.

Stephen, that cut out is for the hull drainage valve control rod.

No Jordan. The hull drain is through another purpose made round hole. I've also often wondered what the square hole is for. I need to remove my Bren tripod and get directly over it and see what it might line up with, say on the gearbox??? Ron

Did I read somewhere they are made of brass and copper to help with radio suppression?
I think only the later carriers had the water drain handle up the top, not MkI universals, which I think this grill is off (TL12123)

Has anyone got a spare handle like the one on Richard's engine cover?

Having had a look, it is definately all copper (mesh as well). You probably couldn't fold sheet brass like that without it breaking.

I just took my bren tripod off to get a better picture. I still can't work out what the square hole is for. But you can clearly see the part number on the mesh panel. Ron
