The interesting thing is they didn't need to go through it as there was an alternative route they could have taken, and being locals they would have known that. I think you're right, they were caught out by how deep it was, not having experienced anything like it before.
Belinda had to work and was turned back a couple of times by the fire crews as she tried to find a way home, finally arriving via a neighbour's driveway.

Good work for a lucky crew, in perspective they probably were not in any more danger than a regular emergency run on clear dry day. People not yielding to emergency vehicles or not hearing them is probably a much greater risk.
