Default Spring / Eye bolt info.

O.K. As I seem to be the only one in the world, who will front up with the info.
I will do so, but Kevin, as you buy up Canada's stock of carrier bits, you are expected to help me find a good canadian steering wheel.

Here are some specs;

Eye bolt. TL12685.
Overall length 118.5mm.
Thread length 83mm.
Thread 1/2" BSF.
Eye O.D. 25.4mm.
Eye I.D. 13mm.

Hull bracket TL 12649. (FMCo 41)
Length 78mm.
Cut from 1.0 x 1 1/2" (25.4 x 38 x 5) unequal angle. (thats 5mm thick)
The holes are 10mm dia. at 2.0" (51mm) centers.

The Spring. It has F.M.Co T.L.6xxx-xx in one hook (x = undecipherable)
Wire dia. 5mm.
spring length 260mm. (not including the hooks)
effective length. 300mm. (to inside of both hooks)
Hook wire dia. 7.5mm.
dia. of spring. 25.4mm.
hook circle. 28.mm. (its not exactly a circle the end is straight.
In case its not obvious, the hooks are separate pieces.

If you dont have a spare steering wheel, and you need more info, feel free to ask. I'll let you know if I think its a dumb question. (there aren't any dumb questions)
Except maybe this one. Richard, Where might I be expected to go to get a 3D scan done? (If I was in the U.K, i'd go to Ben)
Photos to follow.

Default the spring

Hi Lynn
Great info mate. Love your work.

How are the hooks finished inside the spring. Maybe not an easy question but I assume an over sized round end or something similar.

If you can let me know, I'll ask "THE SPRING MAKER" to have a go.

Of course, I'll only have 1 made because there could not possibly be anyone else interested.

Kind Regards
Nigel

I think a lot of springs used to be made like this. I think the end is probably squashed, to make the it bigger.

Default spring

Hi All

The spring man can make the spring as per Lynn's info. The price is $50 Aussie dollars each if 12 are made at once.

Expressions of interest please because to make one I was quoted $230

OR

If anyone else is interested in acquiring another quote please do so and put me on the list of buyers.

Kind Regards
Nigel

Default Calling Lyn!

Lyn. In your posts 134 and 139, You show the part that I need to get made, which is the tooth part for 7/8" rods, which meshes with the toothed base. I could do with pictures and measurements.
I will machine and use this mushroom part (from a ground station kit) and make a facsimile. Ron

Ron, Lynn.

Perhaps we could talk Lynn into sending that part over to the uk for us to copy, I am sure we could make it worth his while.

Lets us know if this is possible, all costs covered of course.

Default Kevin, Ron, Richard, and others.

As it appears that (amongst 10 of us anyway) I have the only one left on the planet, that won't happen.
I have a better idea. I will take mine to a local bloke who does a bit of casting, and ask him to make some copies (I'm sure they wont be as good as what Ben is getting done) but they won't be too bad.
Hobsons choice lads.
I have had two bad experiences with the Canadian, and the Australian Postal services in the last year. They both came good in the end. But I am not prepared to risk it.
Nothing will happen until the new year, but those of you who think they want one, had better let me know. I will only get the numbers requested, and have no reason to make extras. I can then get a price based on numbers, and let you know. There will only be one run.

I don't blame you for your caution Lyn. But your offer to get some cast would do me fine as I suspect would be the case for others here in UK.
So let me start the count by declaring myself No1

Thanks a million, Ron

Hi Lynn

Just a thought but is there any reason it can't be made from a section of steel pipe or thick walled tubing ?

Although I have the smaller insulated base as well as parts of the larger I always had it in mind to turn new ones out of hardwood (even bought a wood lathe to do it) and make the toothed part to fit the insulator and my cast brass ribbed base plate. All theoretical of course...

Cheers

Phill

Can I suggest that when the time comes for Lyn to make a move with this, that we pay him a deposit, (or the amount in full if he has a quote). This would prove our commitment and avoid him getting stuffed with unclaimed goods. Ron

Default Antenna

Hi, Just finished making this part for the antenna, just need to drill the oil lubrication hole and its done, will post up some pics of the 'bump stop' part i am making this week, i need to make another of these, if anyone in the uk wants to borrow these parts let me know, the originals i will have to return soon. The spring I think will have to be custom made unless anyone knows of something similar we can use i.e. BSA moterbike kick stand spring??.

Default Ron , Kevin, Nigel + others

O.k guys, I am sorry i forgot about this.
I have today stripped the insulator from the brass base. (was not easy)
I better have an indication back from interested parties, as to what they might like. The base ring, the insulator cup or both.
As an indication, I sent 8.000kg's in a small box to the U.K. Post cost me about 100 pounds.
The two bits weigh in on my bathroom scales at 1.8kg.
I am not intending to remove the chain assembly from the cup. It can be machined (faced, drilled, and tapped by the owner) who can then make up the chain and screw assembly.
Ron, the inside dia. of the cup is about 84mm.
I believe Phillip has the ring for the smaller (5/8") base.
You might prefer to have his copied?
I will obtain a price based on the numbers.
Let me know

Brass, bronze, or gunmetal, depends on what the foundry person says.

Is anyone considering making up the insulators?

Lynn, Kevin

Happy to help with the pattern work for new cast parts if that helps? Kevin, I'll have to have a look at the parts next time we catch up.

Small order springs in the UK might be worth a try for the springs you need....even bespoke ones aren't that expensive if you get a small batch.

Hi, I have emailed, small order springs and asked for a quote on a run of eight springs. Lynn, I can lend Ben my aerial parts if you like and we can get them done here, but I dont think ben needs these particular parts for his carrier.

Default Casting price

I have had a price to cast up the two toothed parts of the aerial base.
The piece where the chain attaches will need machining. This will be up to the new owner.
The price I ended up with was $200.00 NZ (may be a little less) This price is for both parts.
Kevin I will ask for a separate price.

Default Antenna Spring.

Hi, Just made a couple of springs for the antenna used e-bay spring item number 200662681500 at £5.00 each, i was lucky to get some springs from work which had the correct type 360 degree swivel ends which I removed and attached to these springs. I had a quote from 'small quantity springs' but the guy tried to up the price once he had the original in his hand, wanted £60a spring.................I asked politely for it to be returned.

I can now return all the original parts to Canada, I am making two more for Nigel but then I wont have any more of those ends left, but anyone can make these springs they are straight forward to make with a pair of mole grips to form the 'barrel ends'.
