Not answering your question, Ian. But, Welcome to MLU.

Maybe you can tell us all a bit about yourself in another thread.

Regards Rick.

Euan,

99 on red background = (from early 1943 till the scheme was revised in August 1944), the 2nd (in seniority) Infantry Battalion in an Infantry Brigade of an Infantry Division. Which actual unit it was assigned to would depend on the Formation Sign (which no doubt appeared on another storage bin!)

Default 99/69

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info, just what I was looking for. So under the 99 is 69, would the same apply to this?

Hi Euan,

Don't quite understand: can you send me a higher res image directly via email, so I can see it more clearly? Is the '69' is behind the '99', ie the '99' overpaints the '69'? ( I can't actually see that on the image).

I'll then reply to you direct. From memory, both 69 and 99 are infantry unit signs of the 43-44 period, but I'll have to check.

Hi Euan,

69 on a brown background would be the third Bn in the 3rd Brigade of an Infantry Division. I have no record of that number on a red background. Some examples would be 9 Division, 2/33 Bn or 2/48 Bn. Also used briefly by 4th Motor Regt when part of 3rd Motor Brigade Group.

99 on a red background: some examples are: 13/33rd Aust Inf Bn (AIF) and 41st Aust Inf Bn (AIF).

Is your carrier a SAR manufactured carrier? The nearest confirmed hull number I have to that is 4962, so it would be useful to know where 4993 was made.

Mike

Hi Mike,
Yes 4993 is SAR, the 99 bin is from another carrier as mine was missing.
The closest to mine would be Dave Argils 4995 as see on you tube when it was for sale on Ebay.
