The CBC Archives is one of those sites that you have to visit every now and then as they seem to add stuff over time. I've been looking at the CBC Archives for information on WWII, in particular Matthew Halton and the other reporters for a number of years. Some stuff seems to appear for awhile then disappear only to return later. There should be a lot more sound recordings than are currently listed hopefully over time more of the broadcast recordings will turn up and be made available on line. I keep hoping to find a photo of the inside of one of the recording HUPs. Cheers Phil

From Dad's War: http://www.dadswar.com/9.html Town of Zwischenahn near the city of Oldenburg, Germany.
An interesting read. For the HUP reference, scroll down to the pictures of the ships and read on. Apparently HUPs were good for morale in post war occupied Germany.

http://www.btinternet.com/~roger.beckwith/bh/links.htm is a webpage dedicated to old BBC Radio Broadcasting Equipment and Memories.
Not surprisingly, Phil Waterman is mentioned.

Yes, I have tried to get in touch but unfortunately I didn't know that I was having intermittent sending and receiving on my e-mail account right around that time so that I was only getting about 1 out of 3 e-mails sent to me, so my contact sort of failed. So if anybody out there can help me reestablish contact it would be appreciated. Interesting links to Art Holmes recordings, the CMP 3 ton he is speaking of Betsy. Cheers Phil

More on Art Holmes - the clip shows a HUP at the mid point (3.00 minute mark) and the CBC host refers to it as Big Betsy - a typical error. The clip also shows the jeep mounted recording unit (6:04).
http://archives.cbc.ca/war_conflict/...ar/clips/3487/ Alas, no interior HUP recording van shots...yet.

The article refers to Art Holmes and his HUP - again called Big Betsy. The Canadian Broadcast Museum Foundation wanted to set up a display at the Canada Museum of Science of Technology to show the public the works of our war correspondents and others. The article mentions that a HUP was to be loaned to the exhibit.
What makes this strange is the mention of Rene Levesque who, before he became The Separtist, was a Canadian war correspondent. http://www.cbmf-fmcr.ca/Newsletter/j...nsonspeech.php

Hi Rob
More good finds, now I'm working on capturing the photos and video, wish they were little larger in size. Though some of the still photos I have tracked back to bigger images. Interesting about the vehicle name Betsy, I'll have to dig back through the books and see if there is any mention of Big Betsy as being the HUP Betsy as being the original 3 ton. Cheers Phil
