If anyone is planning on attending that auction (and not bidding on the M100 ), PM me. It seems I can't proxy bid over the Internet.

Scotty

Default Volkswagen Iltis

It looks like lot V146 is a Volkswagen Iltis, not a Bombardier. Note the German tail lights, tire mount, antenna mount on the front fender and footman loops for the roof instead of the posts. Interesting that it has a Canadian grille guard, pintle hitch and three colour Canadian cam. I imagine that this is one of the few German (trials vehicles?) that appear in the CF Iltis holdings. Unfortunately the VIN in the listing looks suspicious even for a Volkswagen.

Good eye Jason. Note that it has "training aid" stenciled on the corner.

I'm not sure there was any difference on the basic spare tire carrier between the Canadian and the German versions. Ours simply had the wheel adapter for the M100 trailer added to the spare tire carrier, and the wheel turned around the other way. I recall that whenever we ordered the bolt from the manual for the spare tire, we always got one that was too short, meant for the german version.

Clive has Scotty's info from the EDR on Ramtank and he has recorded that ECC 121901 was assigned to 4 VW Iltis and ECC 121911 was assigned to 1 VW Iltis ambulance. So it appears that this is one of the 5 German vehicles we had in the CF. It must have spent most of its life as a training aid to have survived until now.

I wonder if it would be possible to see what serial numbers were recorded in the EDR for these ECC's?

It looks as though most of these Iltis have the large cargo chute rings on the bumpers. I wonder if they were last in use as training loads for cargo drops?

It would be too easy to check the VMO history of the Iltis CFRs (other than the oddball trials model) and see what the common thread is to these vehicles.

The cargo drop theory is a possibility as it would explain the poor condition of the trailers.

In some of the photos of MLVWs being auctioned out of Pet last year there was a photo of an M100 in the background of the compound. I wonder if this is the same one.

My bets are one of these along with the Iltis Trailer came from Trenton, as they had them there for Para Drop training. They sat outside uncovered for years as they were essentially paper weights. I can pull the Data on the VW Iltis when I'm back to work.

I went down to Trenton a few months ago to look at 5 trailers that were up for auction. Sure enough they had similar bangs and bruises from being dropped out of a perfectly good plane. LOL

P.S. I didn't win any of them. ARGH.
