As promised, I brought in my grenade box and measured up the felt on the top lid. It is 200 mm thick. You were right about the wood behind it, I had forgotten. The wood and felt are held in place by the two small screws through the lid. I don't see any signs of glue between the felt and the wood.

The Canadian carriers had wood in between pretty much all of the storage bins and the hull including the grenade boxes. I am not sure if it was meant as an anti-squeak or as a spacer to account for the various rivets that might otherwise get in the way of mounting the box flush onto the hull.
