Thanks

I pulled the gearbox off yesterday .. the original factory motor is still in situ .

Pics ... the muffler is somewhat stuffed !

Will take me 5 to 8 years I estimate to restore this truck. But I have salvaged many CS8 wrecks for parts/spares over the years , so have enough bits .

Under the muffler bracket , a tid bit of the original paint .. a nice bronze green - AKA BSC 22 Mid bronze green .. its a rich grass green colour .

Default engine number

The engine is stuck... I have a new set of pistons and new valves ...
These motors have poured big end bearings with shim adjustment , similar to chev 216 . Mains are conventional type shells .
The truck is over engineered in some respects eg.. rear axle is more like a 4 ton truck setup, steering components also very strong, probably as RF tyres were standard fitting .

Hi Mike,

A look through the Chilwell Census list, for your Contract number comes up with this;

Z4434248 to 4434607 Cont. No. V4152 Cat. Ref. 209
Truck, 15 cwt, 4x2, Chemical, type CS8 Mk.III, June 1941

( the date may have been gleaned from a spare parts list as the list is a repro with added information. )

regards, Richard

Interesting ... that contract includes some GS and house type wireless vehicles also ... God only knows what this one was . Sadly, I don't have the Z number as the bonnet is missing ... it doesn't appear to have had the towing setup on it . The only clue as to its previous use is: On the grill , is hand painted "Q 5 " in large size script .

Default Z number

The bonnet from the 1939 CS8 wreck ...this bonnet is from a later truck I think... number is too late for 39

Hi Mike,

Yes, that contract was for several different body types, but the Cat. Ref. No. on the Contract plate narrows it down from what I found in the Chilwell list, 209 is the Truck, Chemical. Now this type of vehicle has come up before, seem to think it might have been something to do with washing down in the event of chemical weapons being used, could be a bit wrong there, but sure someone will know.
