Let me know if you will end up needing a new/used speedometer. I have some at my usual rates. Wise move on the windshield. The lower sections of the windshields are known to rot out. Depending how much restoration you do, I have NOS Iltis wiper arms, wiper connector rod, wiper motors, windshield rear view mirrors. I just replaced those on mine and it really improved the look. I did a modification on the wiper arms by cutting off amout 3/4 inch off the end, filling off some from the sides and riviting on a plastic fitting from Canadian Tire. It will now accept a standard 10 inch Canadian Tire wiper blade. The original Iltis wiper blades are very expensive and tend to fall apart quickly........... It also may be a good time for the Laws to stock up on brake parts. I have front and rear brake cylinders, brass adjusters, and other brake parts. Is the front brake line the metal brake line? Those are easy to make up. If it is the Iltis rubber brake hose, I have a few of those as well. Cheers! Stuart

I was about to ask if you had the metal part of the line or made them up. Tiny little things compared to a CMP ! The leak is a pinhole at the center of the outer radius of the 90 degree bend. Top half is rusting out anyway. Thanks Don

Brake lines on the CMP I have worked on are small 1/4 inch...... is the Iltiss even smaller...... and probably metric.....

Thanks to networking and two generous MLU members, we were told were we could recover the first ever cab 11 that we actually drove on and off the trailer.
It was used as a tow device for taking boats out of the water at a marina. Motor has been replaced with a modern 235 that really runs well. Extra steel in front is all bolted and easily removed..... bumper brackets still there. When loading the 92 year old owner asked if we might be interested in an old trailer/truck frame but that had wheels like the truck. Off we went to the back and discovered under rotting timber/plywood the siad wheels...dig dig... hey this thing has a full solid steel CMP trailer axle..... well we could cut the U bolts.... it had no springs.... owner says if youtake the axle you have to take the whole thing...dig dig.... more lumber flying.... geez it a whole CMP trailer frame... with parts we can use.... awright get the backhoe and lets drag it out to the trailer..... well the 20 foot trailer was too short,,, so we listed the cab 11 rear axle and insert the front of the trailer frame that had no axle. Done deal....... rap we discovered a flat tire on the float... on a new tire I installed the night before.... while Grant is changing the tire the owner said that I might as well take the spare tire from the barn....dig dig .. in a corner are two CMP rims on with a brand new tire (circa 1995) that still had the shop sticker....GoodYear Suburbanite 9x16 Snow Mud grip. So on top of that the camera had two dead batteries... that is why the attached photos are from the driveway at home. WE unloaded in reverse order..... lifting the cab 11 rear axle while Grant pulled the frame from underneath with his Ford... I believe that Rob got pictures of me driving off the trailer. Power train is in excellent shape..... two serviceable fuel tank... dot and dash original floor plate frame very straight but missing the towing hitch and last 8 inches of frame.... very fixable. From the front shocks..rear shock linkages,,, no fuel filter or hole in the frame style of gas tanks...it is probably a very early cab 11 but has the front vents.... Kept the bast for last..... it was free..... Boob ....we will be running it at the BBQ

I uploaded a video showing part of a Hammond recovery operation. See Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cjduhFyTkA
This vid will give you an idea of just how fast Bob can reel a CMP on board his trailer. So, if you see the Hammond Barn crew tooling around with an empty trailer, make sure your CMP is locked up...

Jordan, It seems that only Fords CMPs give us problems with recoverys...The Chevs continue to move with grace and style, while the Fords have to be pulled kicking and fighting all the way.

There are a few out there that swing both ways. However, I do like Gunner's comment ..."If it is a CMP, I will love it." I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the idea. Can't wait until Bobbie chimes in...

Bob? Grant? Guy? You guys still breathing? I have not seen any postings from the barn lately. While I have an excuse for not posting lately (beer drinking tour of the maritimes), you three have been particularly quiet. What is going on there in the great have not province of Ontario?
For collectors in the Annapolis Valley area - there is a 3/4 ton truck sitting near a barn near Cambridge (take the Kentville exit, and head east on highway 1 - keep your eyes peeled on the left hand side), and a flat fender jeep two klicks west of Aylesford, again on the 1 (sitting near a barn on the left side of the road). I am not sure if they are for sale as the "boss" wouldn't let me stop to enquire...something about no rusty army trucks while on vacation...and thus the beer drinking continues... Regards from the Pictou area.

The annual wood gathering has started. After a day of cutting and splitting, then clearing small trees from under the power line to the barn, Bob and I were sitting on the (covered) deck having a well deserved beer when the downpour started. After a bit, while the trees were blowing around crazily we heard a splintering sound as of a tree being blown over. We weren't inclined to investigate since we were dry and had no great desire to change that. Next day Bob did a survey and found a chunk of a tree had been ripped of and was on top of the shelter containing "Ted's truck". I haven't seen it but Bob's description is that there has been no damage to anything except the tree and his nerves. The broken part has been removed from the shelter's roof, now we will brobably have to take down the rest of that tree.
On a local news note, Mik'e place has burned to the ground. No, not Mike Calnan but Mike the finest (only) restauranteur of Hammond. See: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/stor...mond-fire.html or http://ottawa.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loca...805?hub=Ottawa for details. Otherwise, I've been killing a lot of brain cells trying to figure out how much (or little) the C60X has in common with other chev CMPs. If you want a challenge...try to find a source for replacement master cylinders for a C60X, they make HUP parts look easy to source. They are desribed as being a Lockheed box type master cylinder, bore 1-3/4". They seem to be a mirror image of the cylinders used on early CCKWX, some AFKWX, likely early AFKW, possibly early CCKW and Studebaker US6 and US6x4. I haven't been able to figure out whether the symetry is enough that one of the LHD version could be swapped over tho RHD configuration. My brain hurts. |

Hi Rob.......
Glad you re-surface from deep diving in Keith's beer..... Been busy doing lumberjack things for next Winter..... Did some custom trailer hitch job for Marcel's son...... ....found another CMP but we are saving this one for Guy..... from the far reaches of the upper Gatineau.... ...and we had high wind/thundrstorm every day around 4 pm this week..... winter garages have been seen flying..... trampoline in a corn field in Vars.... but our shelters seem to be protected by the high trees around the barn..... ....until one big limb broke off a butternut and crashed on Ted's Winter shelter..... oddly enough the mass of leafage spread the weigth on the tent frame/tarp with no damaged observed so far. Had a dry 60 minute window between storms..... supported the limb with the tractor bucket.....climbed in the bucket using an extension ladder and used the chain saw to dismantle the limb branch by branch........ upper part of the limb is still attached but the shelter is save for now, soon as I got finished it poured like hell. Also fitted wheels to the container...looks cool..... but one of the expensive wheel/tires I got from Guy is flat..... will ask for my money back.... had to drive my truck out to jack up.... one of the boat gas line clip broke...?? got a replacement made in Taiwan..... is that Northern part of Quebec??? Things are supposed to dry up and cool down for the weekend..low twentys.... we hope. When are you due back....?? Boob

We hit the road tomorrow, but will be spending the night in Edmunston. I can only take "Are we there yet?" for so many hours... I hope to be back in McGuinty land the day after and out to the barn shortly thereafter to get reacquainted with my metal mistress and the other members of the HUP fleet. Then, and only then, MY vacation will start.

Just wanted to thank Guy for his help today sewing up some surplus modular tentage for my M38A1 shelter. The UV rays have made my poly tarps too brittle to serve another winter. But thanks to Greg Wright for the tent parts and to Guy for running the canvas through his sewing machine for the repairs. The shelter has a new skin now.

It was a busy weekend for the Hammond crew. Saturday was spent in La Belle Province at the Sorel Car show and shine (losts of show, but not too much in the way of soleil). The car show included a lot of classic American muscle cars, but we stopped by to visit a few members of the "Blue Ball Express" to discuss things CMP and to explore the possibility of a repeat visit by the Express next summer to Hammond.
After walking the grounds, we made our way to the back of the lot in the tree line. There we found the folks we were seeking out. We got a good look at Gerry Boucher's well restored CMP truck. Interestingly, his truck sported some tires made by Gateway. They are commercial tires but look the part. Gerry mentioned that he was unable to find other Gateway tires and had to go to Speciality Tire to get a sprare 10.50 X 16. After drooling over the various CMPs and Jeeps, we made our way to the 3ieme Batterie d'Artillerie de Montreal and met with CWO (ret) Gilles Aubé and his 25 Pounder Gun Detachment. After a tour of the Gun/Howitzer, Bob became an Honourary 3rd Battery Gunner when he fired his first 25 Pounder blank round. It took the rest of the day for Bob to loose the SEG, and he was still smiling when we hit the road back to Hammond. We made a quick stop into the famous Bar B Barn in Montreal's west end. After stuffing ourselves silly, we made for Ottawa. On Sunday, Bob and Grant cleaned out the barn and did some maintenance on the tractor. Today was moving day. We moved some gravel around Bob's driveway and filled in our versions of Lakes Ontario and Erie near the barn. Joyce must have felt sorry for us and ordered us to sit down to a great lunch. Next we moved Bob's antique tractor to the front of the barn and then moved his shelter to the side of the barn next to the Prototype shelter. Bob moved his "Marina" CMP into the shelter and buttoned it up for the winter. After that fun, we extracted a few studs from a HUP front drum. The first one came out with some damage to the threads that left us in a bit of a quandry. Grant's sharp eyes noticed that there were thin locking wires retaining the spacers surrounding the studs. After they were extracted, stud number two came out with no damage. It will be making its way westward tomorrow to fill a special order. It was a full weekend and we took advantage of the so-so weather to get things organized before the fall floods. There is still a lot to do including: more pothole filling, tree cutting, wood splitting, seacan moving, and of course CMP restoration projects. Ain't life grand??? Pic One: Gateway tires? Anyone know this manufacturer? Pic Two: Bob and Gerry getting the low down on Gerry's truck. Pic Three: Artilleur Bob Carriere just before "popping his cherry".

This was a SEG weekend. Both Bob and I had a chance to take our CMPs out for a little run. On Saturday, I took the 45 HUP out and about Bob's back 40 acres. The transfer case works well! Once in 4WD, the HUP seemed unstoppable - but I kept in mind the amount of $, time and effort put into this truck, so nothing "wild" was attempted. Bob on the other hand, decided to take his truck up the side of a mountain of wood chips...next time, I will bring the video camera.
Grant spent a good amount of time restoring the frame of his 3/4ton trailer. That thing will be much better than new when he finishes it. Bob concentrated on installing his 10.50 x 16 tires on his C15 rims. 3 down, 1 to go. I kept busy with wiring the nose of the truck with the excellent wiring loom provided through the services of Phil Waterman. Top notch material that looks the part. As well, I sandblasted the door handles we got on our visit to Sorel earlier this month. Have you ever noticed that when you sandblast chrome plating, it looks like there is a flame near the area being blasted? Cool effect. Every once in a while I do some work on the prototype. This week I managed to free up the roof in preparation for removal. The plan is to weld the roof section (complete) onto a jig and then put it on a rotisserie for weld repairs. I am toying with the idea of welding in complete new panels as opposed to cutting out the rust holes (many) and welding in patches. Any advice would be appreciated. The weather this weekend was fabulous! Most of the bugs even seemed to take the weekend off. I guess there is nothing that compares to hearing your truck merrily idling away as it warms up in anticipation of a short jaunt. Everything just seems to fall into place when I get behind the wheel of my Mistress. It’s the little things in life that makes it all worthwhile. Photos: 1. "The Trailer Parts Boys" at work (which one is Bubbles????) 2. One happy puppy 3. Halfway thru the Prototype's Lobotomy 4. Bob entertains Guy - one of Bob's buddies from the days gone by 5. Bob just before comtemplating a career change as a stunt driver...

I was practicing retiring last Sunday....
Mounted 3 tires on my cleaned up rim using my home made tool....... First tire I buggered up the thread on the 3/4 in rods ...first of all I was mounting a used tire on a salvaged rim to be used only as a "Yard tire/rim" due to a missing stud. The rim had not been sandblasted and painted so more surface resistance. Anyways I destroyed all four 9 inch long 3/4 inch threaded rods...... thread had severe galling....also rod had no lubricant. Got new 3/4 grade 8 equivalent rod and new grade 8 nuts and rewelded everyting. This time I used never seize on the thread and the rims had been properly cleaned and painted slick black...... tires went on like a hot knife in butter...... used the brand new nuts from Australia...with lub..... waht a delight. ....and even had time to drive my rolling chassis around the back field... Encountered a slight technical difficulty on SUnday while driving my C15a chassis.
AS you know Rob and I have had our stock Rochester B carburators rebuilt and flow tested by the Oak brothers in TO. Both our vehicles now run so ever much better...... and they look brand new. Well I was driving mine in the back field using just a fast idle setting when I decided to see if it would climb the steep...45 degree... pile of wood chip located in a corner of the back field. Amazing.... in low gear..low range 4x4 it went all the way up with out even hesitating or spinning...... did it a few times but chickened out going over the top has I had vision of possibly flipping over backwards and with no body/roof.... well I backed down. Did it again a few times and noticed that at a steep angle the carb was flowing raw gas ...literaly dripping gas...... not a good thing if all those fumes could collect inside the engine compartment......did not seem to affect engine performance... I raised my problem on the Stove bolt site and CarbKing confirmed that I may have exceeded the design of the civilian Rochester B carb which is intended for flat street driving. He even commented that the W-1 may have been better designed for such extreme military activity but defenitely too small for my 261 engine. He recommended sourcing a military carburator that would have been original on a GMC 270 engine. Phil have you had any similar experience with your new 261/Rochester combo? Does any one know what carb I should be looking for that fits a 270 GMC...? There is a possibility that a YF Carter ( carb ## ??) carb for a large 6 cylinder Jeep may fit the 261 CFM appetite..... the YF did have a special option for extreme tilt conditions experienced by CJ Jeeps in the 70s. Any suggestions...comments... besides staying on flat ground. Bob
