Here's some more of those ebay prices. The complete 19 set went for $610. Did anyone on MLU get it? Probably not too bad a price when you look at all you get.

I just bought this aerial gear off ebay. I'm pretty sure it's the base for the 20 ft or 34 ft telescoping masts, of which I have a 20 ft. In my manual for the HUW radio installation it says this is used with the no 9 aerial base.
I have the no 9 base that's about a foot tall and was wondering how the two hook together. Is there a pipe that goes in that mast base I just bought then goes into the No 9 base? Also what's the counterpoise? That white wire with my ebay stuff is the aerial wire I assume. What else would have been in that leather case? The pictured NZ 8 cwt looks to have the telescoping mast.

Dave: I've got some reference material in my shack but if you can wait 'til sometime on the weekend, I'll compile answers to most if not all of your questions.
Can I assume that you'll only be interested in HUW installation using F section rod aerials, and not an end fed horizontal long wire. That's important to know, as I plow through the material. One thing which will help you immeasurably is the following pamphlet: Working Instructions Antenna Vertical 34' Steel Mk 1 HQS 9070-12-17 PC 82495C-314 ZA/C00079 3 Mar 44 You can Google this or one of the 19 set sites can help, including the Royal Signals 19 set site. Talk to you on the weekend, if Bruce Parker hasn't jumped in already.

Hi Dave,
The #9 base is for the short VHF whip for the B set. The insulator you have mounts either on the ground spike when used as a ground station or on a mounting plate on the roof of the hardtop vehicle (HUW, M152,etc). When used on a truck the aerial cable is fed to the base by aerial mount C2. The white wire you have are talc coated ground radial leads. This has to do with optimizing the performance of the aerial system. It provides a counterpoise to the vertical radiating element. The bag contained a ground spike, ground pegs, insulating guy assemblies, a couple of hammers and any spare aerial bits that were collected. Edited... I found the manual and the photos show what and how. Last edited by Bruce MacMillan; 20-12-09 at 00:11. Reason: ad photos |

I finally got the manual off the royal signals site. That site isn't just user unfriendly, it's on the verge of user hostile. After two days and about a dozen requests I finally got the link and password.
The manual answered a lot of my questions. I'm also trying to get the manual for the wireless remote control No 1 but am getting another run around. Has anyone got any info on how this unit hooks to the 19 set?

Operating Instructions
Wireless Remote Control Unit No 1 (Canadian) RCA-113894, 5 Jan 43, or, DEIL-36XR298, 13 Nov 44, ZA/CAN1304. Basically any snatch plug from the Control Unit of the 19 set to the snatch plug of the RCU. For operation you need 2 RCUs...the nearby unit (with the 19 set), and the remote unit connected by field cable. You also need a 3V power source into the battery box. Don't fully jack in the key and plug assy until you are ready to send, otherwise dynamotor on 19 set will activate. For the finer points, ya gotta have the manual.

I have a few questions on these pieces too.
-about what year would that hand mike be and is it any better or worse than the regular ones? -what's the green control unit No 17 used for? -what does the control unit No 3 need for wires to hook it to the radio?
