Probably part of the Norman conquest invaders..cause they weren't working on any CMP's then and were bored... But very noticeable in the Irish fisherman's speech which Some Newfoundlanders are directly descended from.. I was living there just after confederation in 1949('53-57) and it was much more noticeable then than it is today.. Just a little history from an old fart..
