Hi, The canadian carriers rear seat backs and square bottom seat panels, were they ever painted?. I have an original seat back in 5 layer ply, stamped on the back with its part number, it shows no signs of ever being painted in olive drab or any other colour, would a quick coat of linseed oil surfice on my new panels.

I have another fact i have discovered during researching these seats is that some original wartime carrier shots show the, four lift the dots at the top of the seat others show five, i guess the 5 are were the opening if for filling with horse hair, any comments please.

i will try and get some pictures later today.

Hope this helps.

From the post above it says that Canadian carriers had square seats as opposed to the round front ones in the Brit carriers? Is this correct for all Canadian carriers or just specific models ie MKI's or MkII's etc? Thanks in advance... Harold

I don't think he was refering to the seat cushions as being square shaped. its the wooden panles that fit into the seat frames that are square. All pictures I have ever seen show the one side as being round.

Adame, any chance of a pic of your seat cushions, i have made my seat backs and one cushion copied from the one i borrowed, same as the one pictured by Ron.

I understand that there are seven layers of padding material in rons seat cushions this to me looks like 'hemp'. Brownish natural fibre i think this is what they also used in the gun butt brackets, boys rifle rest, fuel tanks etc. You can still buy this stuff used as eco freindly insulation. Makes me think that the felt i have seen on restored carriers is too white, get yourself some 'hemp' fibre board, looks spot on.
