I think (could be wrong - usually I am) that the reason quoted was that there was a sudden shortage of ammo. for the 105mms. and that as a temporary measure the British guns were loaned to the Americans.

Now that you mention that, I seem to recall something in that vein myself, but can't for the life of me remember where it was or the details!!
