Your 4.2 inch mortar parts illustration plate seems to provide identification of an item I've had in my workshop for many years horsa. That is item 24, Can lubricating.
Being identified by No and Mk, I would guess that its usage was not confined to the 4.2 inch mortar.

That pattern oil can, along with the leather carrier usually used with one, were also issued with 18/25-pdr guns and I'd imaging other weapons systems as well.

David.

I have one as you describe with what appears to be D.Q.M. Co, 1929, a C-Broad Arrow and a small rounded point triangle stamped into the leather. Never been issued or seen a drop of oil. Sort of a collectors piece all on it's own.
