Mystery ram rod

Can anyone identify this ramrod style? They come in 5' units: brass fittings with wood dowels. Just under 1-5/8" diameter. Various dates 1945 and 1944. Likely British or Canadian. They join with a tongue and slot. Marked CM 588, and sometimes a manufacturer marking SAF 8 Co. The eight may be a stylized "&".

These are standard cleaning stave ends ,British and Canadian used.

You wouldn't have any like this would you Brian? 1 7/8" diameter, 1 1/2" NC thread 46 1/2" long shoulder to shoulder. I'd be happy with just the ends, I need 5 female and 4 male.

Rob; Thanks for quick answer. Sounds easy but I have never seen them any of my manuals and I've shown them to various people over the years but drew little more than a blank stare or a passing yawn.
Adrian: Sorry never had any threaded style rods.

Hi Brian,

Last year I bought a couple of these here in the Netherlands.

The part numbers are the same as listed in the 1942 6pdr parts list but the stave ends are dated 1971! Must have been a good design.

Cheers,

Centurion too!

I was browsing my Centurion I, II and III User Handbook circa 1952 and they show up as part of 17-PR Gun spares: Staves, end, No.72, Mk.I and staves, intermediate, No.2, Mk.I. ......... Brian

Plates from one of the British towed 4.2-inch mortar manuals that show your staves.

Your 4.2 inch mortar parts illustration plate seems to provide identification of an item I've had in my workshop for many years horsa. That is item 24, Can lubricating.
Being identified by No and Mk, I would guess that its usage was not confined to the 4.2 inch mortar.

That pattern oil can, along with the leather carrier usually used with one, were also issued with 18/25-pdr guns and I'd imaging other weapons systems as well.

David.

I have one as you describe with what appears to be D.Q.M. Co, 1929, a C-Broad Arrow and a small rounded point triangle stamped into the leather. Never been issued or seen a drop of oil. Sort of a collectors piece all on it's own.
