Gear stick housing has a good one IMHO it had little chance of being changed out during its service... If you look down the side of the cast bracket it will have the part number followed my FM Co and a date ie FM Co 42 denotes it was made 1942 ;-)

I had a dig about last night for you and have located some original front mudguards. They are straight but could do with a tidy up.

I can openly recommend any cast work produced by Ben Hawkins, and any fab work by Old Buck Restorations based in Suffolk.

Get yourself a plastic vat and fill it with molasses and water and soak any seized bits..... Saves you a packet on grit blasting!!!!

Excellent for seized track too.

I agree with Lynn, stainless is the way to go for steel that thick, make your weld prep 45 degree from both sides leaving a small flat you get good penetration and the root weld pulls the graft into the original plate as it cools. A nice easy fix that. Front armour, you will be able to polish out the weld a treat too..... Very jealous !!!

Default will bear that in mind.

Hello Richard,

I'll bear that in mind, thanks.

A couple more pictures and questions,

Is this piece of wood supposed to be there? I think the chain is the only part of the brake steering i have, the other chain and the rest of the linkage to the steering collum is missing. Also is the small piece of tube fastened to the rail original?

What is suposed to be on this panel? I've got the remains of something?

Found another number on the back. and cb 5804 on the front.

What is this tube for?

I had a look at the dates cast into various parts and they all have 42 on them.

Is the red primmer you can see all over the carrier the normal colour used from the factory? The green it's painted with has been done after it was cut, so i'm wondering if the original paint is between the green and the red, and maybe the number is still there, where were the numbers painted when they were originaly done?

thanks

John

The rear plate, the angle bit which is made into a square is for the bottle Jack and it's wooden footing plate... There are no chains used in the steering system however I can see the end of a clevis from a steering linkage bolted to the end of it.

DO NOT THROW ANYTHING OUT !

it may prove useful later

Mine was painted in red oxide like yours, as was Gordon's (his carrier being two away from mine) both our carriers are 42'ers

The tube holds the cable from the smoke discharger when it's mounted in situ... It's basically a bike brake handle and a cable....roughly translated !

I am only in Newcastle if you are up this way pop in ;-)

At the rear, there are two similar boxed steel things. the mangled one with the stud is the same size as the good one, except the top is open. They hold the jack handle. A strap is fixed to the opposite side to the stud, and comes down onto the stud to hold the two extention halves and the handle in.
The fitting at the right locates the business end of the crank handle.
Bolted to the rear upper plate, above the jack handle is the big armoured battery box (two rows of 3/8 bolt holes) This has the POL box bolted to the back of it, which in turn has the number plate board (steel) This has the tail light mounted on it.
That number up the front, Can you post a picture of it?

Default Carrier brake and steering components

A very impressive find. all the big pieces virtually intact. So much easier to find the bits and bobs over there.
I am olive drab with envy.
Some pics from the parts manual.

John, you wrote:

Toss the wood in the skip. You will eventually need a rear seat bearing plate CTL 13116 in there to support a seat frame above the fuel tank mounting brackets. There is a corresponding similar length bearing plate TL 13115 mounted to the engine cover frame to support the opposite side of the seat frame assembly. You can toss the chain, it is not a brake part. The angle iron attached to the chain can go out too. As Richie mentioned, there are two steering clevis parts, one on either end of the chain. One appears to be CTL 4051, the other CTL 1737. Toss the pipe on the engine rail, as well as the clamp holding it in place.

Does your lower hull number 5701 have a upper case letter 'C' with a line through it?

Your MK-I*carrier was built about the end of April, or very early May, 1942 at the Ford plant, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Michael R, is that his "T" number? What is the "CB"?
If that is the T number she is a fairly early U.C.

Hello Richard,

I'm 20 miles from the carrier telling my brother where to rub. I can see the mark you mean and i have spoken to my brother again and he says there is nothing there. I'll give it a good wire brushing at the weekend to be sure. Will come up and see you soon as i get a bit of time.

John
